There is an extensive body of research documenting the relationship between periodontitis and depression. It was revealed in 2002 that clinical depression may have a negative effect on gum disease treatment outcomes. Researchers have found similar (negative) associations between psychological factors and other surgeries as well.

The prevalence and severity of both periodontitis and depression, are associated with several social determinants such as:
– older age
– low socioeconomic status
– low educational level
– ethnicity
