ADHD symptoms (hyperactivity and difficulty concentrating on tasks or concentrating) are different in adults than in children. Aduts also tend to work harder to make up for their deficiencies. It wasn’t until recent that doctors and psychiatrists began treating ADHD in adults. Adult ADHD was often questioned. Many people with attention deficit or hyperactivity disorder as children were believed that they could be treated in adulthood. This belief, also known by the Theory of Developmental Delay (or simply ADHD theory), was why doctors and insurance companies refused to approve ADHD drugs for children until they were adults. The American Medical Association (AMA) and American Psychiatric Association (APA) now recognize ADHD in adults.
