What are the early signs that you’re getting ready to have a manic episode? These early signs are known as the prodrome. It is possible to spot early signs of manic episodes and help prevent or reduce the severity of the episode.

Bipolar disorder can be progressive. Each episode builds momentum. The prodrome refers to the time when milder symptoms are present before more severe symptoms. This can last from weeks to months. You can have a prodromal phase before you develop depression.

Prodromal symptoms of mania include an increased mood, decreased sleep need and increased activity. These symptoms may last for weeks before they become a manic, hypomanic, or out-of-control episode.

This video explains how to spot these signs early.
